The 2019 Challenge Aspen Trail Marathon Team is headed to Croatia to participate in the Dalmatia Ultra Trail race series October 19, 2019.
Challenge Aspen provides year-round adaptive experiences for individuals faced with cognitive and/or physical disabilities. The staff, volunteers and instructors help to create life-changing opportunities for the participants by encouraging participation in activities designed to redefine limits, recognize abilities, and transfer newfound courage to everyday life. Challenge Aspen holds a special place in my heart not only for all the things they do for so many people with disabilities, but what they have done (and could do) to help our own 9 year old son Sam. Sam has special needs due to epilepsy. Sam was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 20 months old. While his seizures are currently controlled with medication, there can be fear and anxiety around recreational activities. A year ago, Sam had a break-through seizure days before his class was to have their annual ski day. With the help of Challenge Aspen (and Jenny Beltman at AES) we were able to secure a special harness for the chairlift to ensure Sam's safety. It was a fun-filled, seizure-free day! We were so grateful for the piece of mind for his safety while he enjoyed an activity that he loves.
Donating to our marathon team will provide scholarships, adaptive equipment, training, mentorship and advocacy for our heroes. Any donation is significant and helps support the Challenge Aspen mission of Creating Possibilities for People with Disabilities. My goal is to raise a minimum of $3,750.00. I am taking on a new physical feat of training and racing the 54KM trail distance in Croatia. While I am nervous about this new challenge, I am also inspired, motivated, and excited to raise funds for Challenge Aspen and the Challenge Aspen athletes!
